The pedestrian bridge ‘Ooypoort’ is part of the urban renewal of the Waalkade in Nijmegen, connecting the Eastern Waalkade with the Stadswaal and thus being situated on the very border between the city and its natural context.
Its design expresses figuratively the jump to the other side while being based on the optimal constructive form of a bow. Besides facilitating access to the nearby landscape, the height of 8 m offers an attractive lookout point for panoramic view. The progressively changing steps and the carefully articulated bridge profile reinforces the dynamic expression.
The bridge hull is made of fiber-reinforced composite with the worldwide largest span at the time of its opening.
