Karel Klinkenberg Residential Building has been developed together with a building collective of 16 private parties and a contractor. Apartment types and internal layouts vary considerably according to individual personal preference. At the exterior, these differences are more subtly articulated. A homogenizing tectonic grid of concrete panels makes explicit reference to the Modernist legacy of the location with its aesthetics based on the Cartesian grid. However, this evocation of Enlighted, rational subjectivity is subverted with the Romanticist, painterly (‘sfumato’), imperfect quality of the reddish concrete panels and the (depending on individual apartment layouts) irregularly posited non-human inhabitation of the façade with its connotations of cultural relativity and temporality.
The extensive infrastructure of building installation is granted to both humans (energy, water) and non-humans (automated irrigation), while, in turn, the vegetation takes part in this machinic regime of regulating a healthy habitat by providing air filtration, offering sensual pleasures, and contributing to local biodiversity.
